History of Hamburg cuisine
When people think of Hamburg in connection with culinary delights, they think first and foremost of fish in its many forms. This is no coincidence, as the port city has a long tradition of fishing. Typical dishes include the popular eel soup, which was originally used for leftovers. The same goes for pannfisch, fried or cooked pieces of fish served with fried potatoes and mustard sauce. Another classic of Hamburg cuisine is the labskaus, whose main ingredients include salted meat, mashed potatoes, fried egg, maties or rollmops and beet. Strictly speaking, labskaus is not a classic Hamburg dish, but a specialty from the seafaring cuisine. Nevertheless, the specialty has become particularly popular here and has a long tradition. One of Hamburg's greatest culinary landmarks, however, is not a fish dish but a sweet pastry: the Franzbrötchen. The sweet Danish pastry, filled with sugar and cinnamon, has been around since the 19th century and is served for breakfast or afternoon coffee.
Experience the culinary diversity of Hamburg

In addition to traditional Hamburg cuisine, there are international specialties to discover in the Hanseatic city. Whether Indian, Greek, Korean, Turkish or Japanese restaurants: the variety is great. Italian restaurants can also be found almost everywhere, and those who prefer plant-based cuisine will find refined vegetable-based creations in the many vegan restaurants. When the weather is nice, the outdoor restaurants in Hamburg and the many restaurants on the waterfront invite you to enjoy your meals with a view of the Alster or Elbe.
