If you were to describe Steglitz-Zehlendorf in one word, it would be – sophisticated. This is not the part of town for nightlife, parties or hordes of tourists.
Between the elegant and imposing mansions in Dahlem and Lichterfelde-West, and the leafy refinement of the lakes at Wannsee and Schlachtensee; between the elite Free University Berlin and the varied entertainments of Schlossstrasse, everything in this neighbourhood is done with a sense of style and refinement.
Nature
The area is also justifiably famous for its lakes and woodlands. During summer, Berliners flock to the shores of Wannsee, Krumme Lanke and Schlachtensee, escaping the heat of the city and dipping their toes into the water.
Residents can also go walking and cycling in the 3,000-hectare Grunewald forest which the district shares with neighbouring Wilmersdorf.
Away from the lakes and forests and nestled amongst the stylish villas lie the Botanical Gardens, laid out over a century ago, and featuring around 22,000 different plant species.
Economics
Founded in 1948, the Free University of Berlin is one of Germany's most recognised universities, renowned for its research in the humanities and social sciences, as well as in the natural and life sciences. It is one of the most important features of the district.
The largest commercial area is in the historical business and industrial area around Goerzallee/Zehlendorfer canal, with approx. 77 ha and 170 companies.
